Fresh kills - New York
A landfill site at the beginning of the reclamation process is a largely desertified area that can be considered as an ecosystem at its initial development stage. To reconnect a landfill site to physical and cultural territory, recovered areas must be given a clear use, be it economic, social, cultural, or scientific. The objective of the reclamation is to improve the safety of the landfill by means of a programme of specific actions.
The site may improve the quality of life for local and regional communities by creating recreational woodlands, gardens, extensive green areas, etc. Such uses do not exclude possible economic returns for the services provided. However, they must be areas with positive and long-term activities.
